Three people were reported dead and several injured in the Fagerba area of Lagos on Monday, involving the newly appointed chairman, the Lagos Parks and Garages Committee Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (popularly known as “MC Oluomo”) and the National Clash of some loyalists of the Road Transport Union. The incident reportedly occurred when supporters of the newly appointed chairman attempted to formally take over the park from NURTW, but were resisted by those previously in charge of the area.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident that began in the morning was said to have continued uninterrupted, deteriorated and extended to Ogba and Pen Cinema in Ifako/Ijaiye, with an undetermined number of people said to have been injured.
An eyewitness named Mojere Ope said the crisis was noticed a few days ago when Akinsanya was announced as chairman of the parks and garage committee.
“One of his loyalists from the Yaya Abatan area was seen moving from garage to garage, urging people to condemn their NURTW membership and pitch their tent with ‘MC Oluomo’, but this peaked on Monday, At the time some hooligans arrived at the main park at the same time to insist people condemn them for joining NURTW.
“This led to an altercation and those who refused to denounce them as NURTW members were injured while others fled for safety.
“The affected areas are Ogba, Ifako, Fagba and Pen Cinema and people including passersby were injured,” he said.
Another witness, Solagbade Alogba, said he got into an argument at Pen Cinema as he waited for a bus to Agege, “I saw about 100 hooligans brandishing dangerous weapons while people were motionless. Shout, “Say MC, say Oluomo.” Although I didn’t know their mission, I took action to avoid any mishaps.”
One victim of the incident, identified simply as Samuel, is being treated at an undisclosed hospital.
It was not possible to determine if anyone was killed, but some parks and garages in the affected areas were empty.
As of press time, the police have rushed to the affected areas to control the situation.
Recall that Alhaji Akinsanya was suspended as Lagos State Chairman of NURTW, but the state government later announced his appointment as Chairman of National Parks and Garages.
Likewise, Lagos State President, Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) Alhaji Azeez Abiola, better known as Istijabah, on Monday morning issued a warning to security personnel, including State Police Chief CP Abiodun Alabi, of the imminent danger to the state .
Both Istijabah and Akinsanya have been embroiled in a leadership battle that has lasted for months.
Alhaji Akinsanya could not be reached at press time.
Lagos State Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin did not respond to messages sent to his phone.
